The Job-Embedded pathway is an alternative pathway to teacher licensure.  The program allows individuals holding a bachelor’s degree to be hired as the Teacher of Record while completing the Tennessee Department of Education’s requirements for teacher licensure. UT Martin’s Job-Embedded program is offered at the graduate level.  The program consists of graduate level coursework which coursework which is delivered in an online format.  Additional coursework is required to complete a master’s degree.  Individuals enrolled in the program are allowed a three-year time period to complete all licensure requirements.  Individuals MUST be hired as a teacher and complete at least one year (10 months minimum) of teaching full-time to complete the clinical experience requirement for this program.  The cost per three credit hour course for the 2024-25 academic year is $1,986.

Program Qualifications

How does an individual qualify for a Job-Embedded License?

  1. The individual must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. The individual must show “proof of content knowledge”. This can be achieved with a passing score on the content knowledge Praxis test or NES test for the licensure area the individual is being hired to teach or, for some endorsements, a bachelor’s degree with a major in the subject of your endorsement can be used to provide “proof of content knowledge”.
  3. The individual must be hired as the teacher of record by a school system in which UT Martin has a current partnership.

The Job-Embedded process begins with the employing school district.  The district must submit UT Martin’s “Intent to Hire” form for the candidate they intend to employ.  The district should ensure that the candidate is eligible for hire.  This includes ensuring the candidate holds a bachelor's degree in the content area they are being hired to teach from a regionally accredited institution or that they have passed the required Praxis exam(s) and has a cumulative GPA that is acceptable for admission to the graduate program.

NOTE: The Intent to Hire form must be received from the hiring district prior to an individual being eligible to complete the job-embedded pathway.

Information for Districts

NOTE:  Districts will be asked to complete an annual review of their job-embedded hires to verify employment.

Educator Preparation Program (EPP) Admission Overview

EPP admission is separate from admission to the graduate program. EPP admission is the formal admission process to the professional component of the program. It is a two-step process; the first of which will occur while enrolled in Teacher Education 730.

Field Experience Requirements

Job-embedded teachers will be required to complete all course assignments, assessments, and field experiences required of the courses you are enrolled in while serving as the full-time teacher of record. K-5 and Interventionist K-8 job-embedded teachers will be required to complete field experience assignments in a grade K-2 setting while enrolled in Reading 742. If not teaching in a K-2 grade level, arrangements will need to be made with your district to complete the field experience the semester this course is taken.

Job-embedded Monitoring and Support

As a newly hired job-embedded teacher, UT Martin’s Educator Preparation Program (EPP) is required by the Tennessee Department of Education to monitor your teaching for a three-year period. In addition to the monitoring process, the EPP provides ongoing support of all candidates. Support is available in a variety of delivery methods such as providing resources, coaching, and feedback in the areas of teaching and instruction, including differentiated instruction, standards and objectives, grouping, classroom management, and managing student behaviors.

During the three-year time frame job-embedded candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Attend all Zoom or other required check-ins as requested.
  • Submit copies of all district evaluations to Student Learning and Licensure by stated deadlines.
  • Advise and update the licensure analyst and program manager of any changes to school, content area, grade level, or employment status.

Following ongoing review of job-embedded candidate performance, a clinical supervisor may be assigned to provide additional support and feedback.

Failure to meet the above requirements may result in the job-embedded teacher receiving an Off-Track designation. Further refusal to submit district evaluations or respond to communication from the EPP office may result in Disaffiliation from the job-embedded program.

For questions concerning ongoing monitoring or job-embedded program support, please contact the Program Manager of Induction & Job-Embedded Programs, Dr. Cheryl Stewart at cstewa72@utm.edu or 731-881-7201.
