Larry T. McGehee

Early Life and Education

Larry Thomas McGehee was born on May 18, 1936, in Paris, Tennessee, to George Eugene McGehee and Margaret Elizabeth Thomas.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Transylvania College in 1958.

He later earned Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Arts, and doctoral degrees from Yale University in 1963, 1964, and 1969 respectively.

Career Before UT Martin

McGehee began his career in education in 1966 as director and assistant vice president of university relations at the University of Alabama.

By 1969, he became executive vice president of the University of Alabama, a position he held until 1971.

He was serving as academic vice chancellor when he left Alabama to become chancellor at UT Martin.

Chancellorship at UT Martin

McGehee served as chancellor of UT Martin from 1971 to 1979.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1979, McGehee became special assistant to the president at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

He left UT in 1982 to join Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, as vice president of planning, marketing, and evaluation, a role he held until his death.

McGehee died on October 25, 2008, at his home in Spartanburg at the age of 72.
